apEye: Artificial prosthetic eyes

The CASIA2 apEye software enables a fully digital workflow for the 3D production of ocular prostheses. The process is simple, efficient and pain-free for patients. Doctors, ocularists, hospitals and clinics also benefit from a streamlined workflow and the latest advances in digital manufacturing. The result is a 3D printed ocular prosthesis with true-to-life colours and a unique iris topography.

Partners

The apEye project brought together leading partners from research, medicine and additive manufacturing. Software development was supported by Fraunhofer IGD in Darmstadt, while medical expertise was provided by Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. Together, they covered the entire workflow – from image acquisition and data processing to 3D printing and clinical evaluation. Today, the project is continued by Kröner Medical under the name ocla. Kröner Medical is responsible for the distribution of the ocular prostheses and the coordination of production, logistics and shipping.
